I had 2GB RAM and gave it another 2GB. That made a huge impact. Also I had done some MYSQL tuning, but there I am not that sure what I am doing (hopefully mysqltuner.pl knows). But, it works much better now. Thank you very much for your hints.

O dear, it is slow again since some weeks now... I have seen, there have been some database updates, which should be installed manually? At the moment I got back to 1262, in the GUI there is something to do for 1261, but I guess that could not applied because I am on 1262. I have updated to 1263, then there have been DB updates for 1261 and 1263. But still, 1261 isn't working (obviously, if I understand that correctly), and with 1263 I get a 504 error.
How could I apply this DB updates now?

Fun fact: If I go to /admin/site and just click on "save" somewhere, after that the stream loads very fast

That's funny. It doesn't work on my side, but lucky you. Did you do the DB updates manually?

I have my Streams instance hosted on a Vultr VPS (one of the $3.50/month VPS). My mariadb server is on a seperate VPS (same type) and they have a private network between the two.
Once I switched over from having db server and webserver on the same VPS the performance increased quite a bit, even though both VPS are low-end.
I also have my email/jabber server on yet another VPS, which solved some other issues I was having. Going forward I will probably try to keep my various services separate like this, as it makes administration easier and fixes some performance issues ( and I think adds some security, but that might just be an illusion..not sure internet security exists anymore)

This is also very tempting, having the DB server for various services on a dedicated device. This is really something I should try in the near future.

Another option (works very well for me):
admin/site/
Expiration period in days for imported streams and cached images: 14

Meanwhile the error with 1263 is gone, still there is the upgrade 1261 available, but doesn't work via GUI.
